Dale Earnhardt Jr. didn’t let starting near the rear of the field for Sunday’s race at Texas Motor Speedway slow him down. Earnhardt drove the No. 88 Axalta Chevrolet SS through the pack to earn his first top-five finish of the 2017 season.
An incident with less than 100 laps to go in Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series race in Martinsville, Virginia sidelined Dale Earnhardt Jr. and the No. 88 Axalta Chevrolet team after showcasing solid runs throughout the course of the 500-lap event.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. made his 600th career NASCAR Cup Series start on Sunday in Fontana, California. Earnhardt qualified 18th, but started the race from the rear of the field after the No. 88 Axalta Chevrolet SS team needed to replace a cut right-front tire prior to the race. On the last lap, with Earnhardt battling on the verge of the top 10, he got caught behind a competitor that had made contact with the wall and ultimately took the checkered flag 16th.
After starting 3rd and having a good first run in Sunday's race at Phoenix International Raceway, Dale Earnhardt Jr. encountered handling & brake issues on the No. 88 Chevy as the race went on, but Earnhardt was able to hold on for a top-15 finish.
